Default File Locations
Exchange Server 2003 setup creates the following folder structure during installation.

Stores dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) for e-mail address proxies. The default installation contains DLLs for Microsoft Mail for PC Networks, Lotus cc:Mail, Lotus Notes, Novell GroupWise, SMTP, and X.400 e-mail address generators.
Bin Stores components for Exchange.
Conndata Stores supports the MS Mail connector.
Exchweb Stores Outlook Web Access components.
ExchangeServer_servername Stores data for MSSearch and context indexing support
Mailroot Contains a folder for each SMTP virtual server that you configure on your server.
Mdbdata Stores database files and their associated transaction log files
Mtadata Stores configuration information, template database, and log files for the MTA.
OMA Stores Outlook Mobile Access components
Res Stores logs for the Event Viewer and the Windows System Monitor.
Schema Stores the OLE DB schema.
Srsdata Stores data for the Site Replication Service.
servername.log Stores log files for the message-tracking feature of Exchange System Manager.

Default Exchange 2003 Services
Here are the default services that are installed in a typical Exchange 2003 installation.

Microsoft Exchange Event

Monitors folders and fires events for server applications that are compatible with Exchange Server 5.5.
Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 Provides Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP4) Services to clients.
Microsoft Exchange Information Store Manages the Microsoft Exchange Information Store. This includes mailbox stores and public folder stores.
Microsoft Exchange Management Provides Exchange management information using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).
Microsoft Exchange MTA Stacks Provides Microsoft Exchange X.400 services. Exchange X.400 services are used for connecting to Exchange 5.5 servers, and by other connectors (custom gateways).
Microsoft Exchange POP3 Provides Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) Services to clients.
Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine Provides topology and routing information to Exchange Server 2003 servers.
Microsoft Exchange Site Replication Service Provides a local Exchange Server 5.5 compatible directory for coexistence with Exchange Server 5.5 servers.
Microsoft Exchange System Attendant Provides monitoring, maintenance, and Active Directory lookup services for Microsoft Exchange.
Microsoft Search Creates full-text indexes on content and properties of structured and semi-structured data to allow fast searches.
